BACKGROUND STORY

After a tragic incident at the Temple of Horus, Lara Croft did not return. Her previous mentor, Werner Von Croy, tried to save her but failed. Now, Lara Croft is presumably dead, and her friends have gathered at the Croft Estate to reminisce about her past adventures that have not been revealed till now. Her friends, including Jean Yves, Winston, and Father Patrick Dunstan, share different stories about Lara Croft, and you get to play them.

In the first adventure, Lara is in Rome, and she is in a quest for the Philosopher's Stone. The villains from the original Tomb Raider game, Larson and Pierre, are back and are attempting to thwart Lara's plans and get the stone for themselves. The scene at the beginning shows Lara at an opera, and Larson and Pierre show up to supposedly sell the Mercury Stone to her. It is another artifact needed to obtain the Philospher's Stone. It turned out that Larson and Pierre did not intend on selling the stone at all. Instead, they wanted to keep the stone for themselves and Lara's money. Lara attacks Larson and Pierre with some quick punches and kicks, grabs the stone, and runs off. In Rome, there are three levels- Streets of Rome, Trajan's Markets, and the Coliseum. In these levels, you get to battle enemies like dogs, a giant knight, gladiators, lions, and more. You are equipped with Lara's pistols, revolver, and the shotgun.

Next, Lara is at a Russian base, and Jean Yves was with her at the beginning. In the beginning, a cutscene shows Lara and Jean Yves looking at the base. They discuss some things, and Lara goes into the base alone. She goes inside the Russian Base and is attempting to obtain the Spear of Destiny. Unfortunately, Sergei, a Russian mafioso, is trying to get the Spear of Destiny for himself. He wants to use the Spear of Destiny for world domination. Accompanying Sergei is Admiral Yarofev. He is an old Russian admiral who served Russia for years. The gameplay here is different from normal Tomb Raider gameplay. In one level, Lara is captured by the enemy and is disarmed. Then, Lara must make use of her surroundings. She pries off a metal handle and uses it as a crowbar. She must also sneak up behind a cook and club him on the head with the crowbar. In these levels, you can experience an expedition at the base, the submarine, go through a deepsea dive, and escape from a sinking submarine. You are equipped with Lara's pistols, Desert Eagle, crowbar, and shotgun. Lara will battle enemies like dogs, guards, and snipers. In addition, Lara is wearing a new costume. She is now wearing a winter jacket and pants.

The third story takes place on the Black Isle in Ireland. The Black Isle is an abandoned island that is crawling with demons. Lara appears as a teenager here, and she came here when she hid on Father Patrick Dunstan's boat. Father Dunstan was on a mission to fight the demons on this abandoned island, and Lara wanted to go with him. Since Lara is just a teenager, she does not have any weapons. This story is more of a childhood adventure than an action level. Lara must evade enemies like skeletons wielding swords and little white creatures with knives.

The fourth and last story takes place in a tower block in Von Croy Industries. This last level features Lara in an attempt to steal the Iris artifact. Von Croy was still evil here, and he tried to kill Lara. However, he only appears in the last level, Red Alert!. In the previous levels of this story, Lara must battle guards. This story, like the story in the Russian base, is also quite different from the normal Tomb Raider gameplay. Sometimes, Lara is disarmed. So, instead of blasting and killing everything Lara sees, she must sometimes creep up behind an enemy and smother him with a chloroform-soaked cloth. Lara must also walk slowly in order to avoid waking up a sleeping guard. In addition, Lara is wearing a black catsuit and headset. This level features a lot of crawling through air vents and avoiding laser beams.

In the end, Lara escapes from Von Croy Industries on her hang-glider, and Lara's friends are drinking a toast to her. Meanwhile, Von Croy is still roaming the Egyptian desert, and an Egyptian man leads him into a tomb. He comes upon Lara's backpack. Maybe, Lara is not dead. We'll find out soon.
